How It Works

How TMJ treatment works

1

Assess the jaw and neck

Your physiotherapist checks how your jaw opens and moves, the muscles around it, and your neck and posture.

2

Hands-on treatment

Care may include manual therapy for the jaw and neck, soft tissue work and, where suitable, IMS or dry needling.

3

Habits and exercises

You learn jaw exercises and habit changes for clenching, posture and daily routines, so improvements last between visits.

Common Questions

TMJ and jaw pain physiotherapy questions, answered.

Can a physiotherapist treat TMJ?

Yes. Physiotherapists assess and treat jaw pain, clicking and tightness, and the neck tension and headaches linked to them, using manual therapy, exercises and habit advice.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?

No referral is needed to book. If your dentist has made a night guard or other treatment, bring the details so your physiotherapist can work alongside it.

Which clinics offer TMJ physiotherapy?

Both. Jason Tong and Otto Tam see patients at Seafair and Minoru, and Derek Ip at Minoru.

Can jaw pain be part of an ICBC claim?

Jaw pain can follow a car accident. Physiotherapy is part of ICBC's pre-approved care, and we bill ICBC directly when you bring your claim number.

Can I get TMJ treatment in Cantonese or Mandarin?

Yes. Jason Tong and Otto Tam both speak Cantonese and Mandarin, and Derek Ip speaks Cantonese.
